Beyond the Wellness Trend: Why We Need a New Way of Looking at Wellbeing
Despite an explosion of wellness apps, meditation programmes, and corporate wellbeing initiatives, rates of burnout, anxiety, and disconnection continue to rise. Our current approach to wellbeing isn't working as effectively as it should. Deloitte’s research into mental health and wellbeing found an increase in some elements of burnout. 63% of respondents said they were exhibiting at least one sign of burnout, such as feeling of exhaustion, mental distance from their job, or a decline in performance at work, an increase from 51% in the previous survey.
Here's why we need a paradigm shift:
The Problem with Our Current Approach
Traditional wellbeing frameworks often treat symptoms rather than root causes. They place responsibility primarily on individuals to "self-care" their way to wellness, while ignoring the systemic conditions that create distress in the first place. They tend to compartmentalize wellbeing into separate buckets—physical, mental, social—missing the deeply interconnected nature of human flourishing.
What a New Paradigm Offers
A more holistic and effective approach to wellbeing would:
Recognize interconnection- Our physical, emotional, social, and spiritual wellbeing cannot be separated. A new paradigm acknowledges how these dimensions influence and reinforce each other.
Address systemic factors- True wellbeing requires examining the environments and systems we operate within—from workplace cultures to economic structures that impact our collective health.
Move beyond metrics- While step counts and meditation minutes have their place, authentic wellbeing includes qualitative elements like meaning, purpose, and connection that resist simple measurement.
Honour diversity- A one-size-fits-all approach to wellbeing fails to recognize cultural differences, individual needs, and varied life circumstances that shape what wellbeing means for each person.
The Path Forward
Reimagining wellbeing means creating spaces—in workplaces, communities, and healthcare systems—that nurture human potential in all its dimensions. It means building cultures that value rest alongside productivity, connection alongside achievement, and collective care alongside personal responsibility.
The most promising innovations in wellbeing don't just add another meditation app to our phones—they transform the fundamental ways we live, work, and relate to each other and the world around us.
The question isn't whether we can afford this new approach to wellbeing, but whether we can afford to continue without it.
